We are happy you found our website! Sorry we are not on any booking platforms but we feel they do not do enough to match your needs and expectations to suitable accommodation and we want our guests to feel Bamboo Hill is a dream come true, which is not the case for everyone. We have had guests who found us too quiet, too close to nature, not standard, too unique.
Quick glance at important booking information: check-in time is as soon as we can have the cabin ready for you, check-out time is 11am, reservations can be made with no deposit but confirmation with full payment via Stripe is needed two weeks before arrival. Refunds for cancellation may be possible.
Are we the place you are looking for?
Rest in the tranquil energy of this beautiful spot with the spacious sky, glistening sea, lapping waves (sometimes crashing), jungle green and tinkling river as the perfect antidote to urban stress. Bamboo Hill is an alternative to a standard hotel, giving you the comforts and personal attention expected but without the crowds. However, our village, Air Batang, is sleepy, has no access to cars and restaurants are not sophisticated. For those seeking a lively ambiance and night-life, Tioman might disappoint, but Tioman Dive Resort gets closest in our village
Nestled on a hill between tropical rainforest and reef paradise, our rustic, traditionally-designed cabins have panoramic sea views. Created by British-born Sue and Islander husband Zul (deceased) Bamboo Hill has been family run since 1991 – a marriage of the spirit of Asia with the standards of Europe. Our rooms are well maintained and naturally ventilated by ceiling fans wafting the sea breeze through floor-to-ceiling, louvered windows (meshed against mosquitoes and bugs). None of the chalets have air-conditioning. We prefer to be one with nature, not cut-off from it; you can even lie in bed and see the sea. Thoughtful details and personal attention make Bamboo Hill a home from home.
Aware of and responsible for the natural environment
To help reduce negative effects of human activities on the pristine environment of this gem of an island, we have gained Green Hotel status and are part of a local initiative to avoid single use plastic. Each cabin has 4 refillable water bottles and free, purified spring water is available from the reception.
Getting to and from the island is a tiring day’s journey. We don’t accept stays of less than 3 nights which give two full days on the island The heart of Bamboo Hill is tranquility so we don’t accept bookings for groups. Until the future becomes more predictable bookings can be made without a deposit or prepayment.
Air Batang Village
Our village is quiet and traditionally Malay. There are no cars. The chalets, shops and restaurants are run by local, mainly Muslim families who are unsophisticated yet welcoming. Snorkeling, diving and jungle trekking are the main activities.
We welcome anyone working from home who needs to get away from the city for a while. All the cabins have WiFi; 80+mbs in the reception and chalet #1, 50-80mbs in chalet #2&rooms #4&5, 20-30mbs in chalet #3. We can provide a desk, a coffee press and ground coffee on request. Stays of over 2 weeks are eligible for a 25-50% discount depending on the month.
